In a groundbreaking achievement, HaystackAnalytics has successfully diagnosed a rare and elusive infection, Murine Typhus, using its innovative index NGS diagnostic test. This remarkable feat was accomplished in a mere 20 hours from sample collection, showcasing the test’s unparalleled speed and accuracy.
Murine Typhus, caused by the intracellular bacteria Rickettsia typhi and transmitted through flea bites, poses significant diagnostic challenges due to its non-specific symptoms and limited detection methods. However, HaystackAnalytics’ advanced technology rose to the occasion, identifying the infection with precision.

The diagnosis was subsequently validated by Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, further solidifying the credibility of Haystack Analytics’ innovative approach. This breakthrough underscores the transformative potential of inflexion NGS in revolutionizing infectious disease diagnosis.
HaystackAnalytics with its index NGS diagnostic test has successfully diagnosed a rare infection, known as Murine Typhus caused by an intracellular bacteria or Rickettsia typhi transmitted by fleas. This was made possible within 20 hours of sample collection. This result was later validated by Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore.
In a recent statement, the company highlighted the significant hurdles these stealthy pathogens pose to healthcare. Rickettsia Typhi, responsible for Murine Typhus, is particularly adept at evading traditional diagnostic methods, leading to delayed or inaccurate diagnoses
The patient had spent considerable resources on various diagnostic attempts, including overseas testing in the US, without receiving conclusive results. Desperate for answers, the treating physician turned to Haystack Analytics as a last resort.
The index NGS is a genome sequencing-based diagnostic test capable of detecting pan-bacterial, pan-fungal, and now respiratory viral infections, along with identifying relevant rare and difficult-to-culture organisms, all within 20 hours. Made in India and designed for global application, index NGS emerges as the preferred test for detecting infectious diseases. In the myriad of emerging infectious agents, infexn using NGS has now evolved into a versatile diagnostic tool for doctors with several leading hospitals in the country relying on infexn NGS as their go-to infection screening test for their patients, said the company.
Timely diagnosis is crucial in infections like Rickettsia Typhi, where targeted therapy is essential for patient recovery,” said [Medical Expert]. “HaystackAnalytics’ index NGS test has proven instrumental in bridging this diagnostic gap. Rickettsia Typhi and similar infections require precise treatment to ensure patient recovery. Delayed or incorrect diagnosis can lead to severe consequences, including prolonged illness, increased morbidity and mortality rates and unnecessary healthcare expenditures.

Dr Mahua Dasgupta Kapoor, director, of medical affairs (infectious diseases), at HaystackAnalytics, said that murine typhus, a rare disease spread by infected flea bites, typically affects areas with rodent infestations. The infection can be spread with infected flea droppings, urine or contaminated areas, especially in rat-prone environments.
“Following a timely and accurate diagnosis, the patient received targeted antibiotic therapy and has made a substantial recovery from murine typhus. The swift and effective treatment has significantly improved the patient’s condition, highlighting the importance of advanced diagnostic technologies and prompt medical intervention,” she said.
