In a groundbreaking development, the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bathinda has successfully conducted preliminary tests on stem cell therapy, offering new hope for patients suffering from heart ailments. This pioneering breakthrough, achieved at the institute’s cutting-edge stem cell culture facility, paves the way for innovative treatments and potentially life-changing solutions.
The biological sciences division at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences has founded a research facility where investigative teams extract, purify and grow progenitor cells from birth tissue of hospitalized individuals.
Globally, cardiovascular diseases claim millions of lives annually, with ischemic heart disease and stroke being the leading causes, according to AIIMS experts citing WHO data
Moreover the inherent capacity of stem cells to proliferate and differentiate underscores their potential in regenerative medicine.
Stem cell treatment offers superior efficacy and convenience, bypassing invasive procedures like surgery and organ transplants, with benefits including rapid recovery, negligible disease transmission risk and minimal adverse reactions, according to central institute medical specialists.
Dr. Akhilesh Pathak, Dean of AIIMS Bathinda, revealed that the institute has successfully set up a state-of-the-art stem cell therapy laboratory, making it the second AIIMS in India to achieve this feat after AIIMS Delhi.
“AIIMS researchers achieve groundbreaking milestone, pioneering stem cell transplantation for organ failure and tissue injuries, poised to revolutionize regenerative medicine, subject to national agency approval,” said Pathak.
This initiative has received funding from the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, under the CRG program.
The research team, led by Dr. Sanjay Kumar, achieves milestone in developing standardized protocols for stem cell treatment of heart diseases
Our cutting-edge laboratory has successfully isolated and cultured stem cells, and subsequently implemented pharmacological preconditioning, a groundbreaking clinical strategy designed to safeguard cardiac health by mitigating reperfusion injury through strategic drug administration,” he added.
Kumar said that they expect a 12-month timeline for the verification and endorsement of our laboratory’s protocols and procedures.
Medical superintendent at AIIMS and head of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery Dr Rajiv Kumar said The complexities of stem cell medicine demand comprehensive investigation and verified results before adoption.
Researchers at our institute are actively driving stem cell medicine forward; we await the project’s results, understanding the validation process’s duration and importance.
