Puberty is a stage of fast growth in the body. It’s a time of transition from childhood to adolescence which include physical, emotional and psychological changes. Children experience mood swings, emotional changes during this time. Parents should try to understand feelings of their kids at this point of time. There are many reasons of mood swings during puberty and adolescence. Some of them are-

Changes in hormone secretion

There is increase in the secretion of Estrogen and Testosterone hormones during puberty. These hormones play an important role in the development of secondary sexual characteristics in teenegars. These hormone also impact the brain, leading to changes in mood and behaviour. Secretion of stress hormone cortisol can also get affected during puberty, contributing to feelings of anxiety or irritability.

Development of brain

Some parts of brain particularly the prefrontal cortex is still developing during puberty. This part is responsible for decision-making and control of  impulse. Mood swings can become more fluctuate due to the development of this part of the brain.

At this stage people often struggle with variety of questions related to identity, self-worth, and peer relationships. Feelings of confusion, frustration, or insecurity are common during this period. It leads to emotional highs and lows.

Pressures

Academic stress, peer pressure and high  expectations from the family can all add to the emotional turbulence of puberty. Maintaining peer goals and meeting family expectations together can be challenging.

Proper sleep

Irregular sleep schedules, which can exacerbate mood swings are common during the period of puberty. Excess use of gadgets and the distraction caused by the same can also be a cause of less sleep-in adolescents.

Daily physical exercises can help regulate mood by releasing endorphins, which are known as natural mood lifters.

Diet

Balanced diet is a must during this phase of life. Diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can provide the necessary nutrients to support both physical and emotional health.

Sound sleep

Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule is crucial for emotional regulation. Try to fix the time to go on bed. It should be before 10 in the night.

Open Communication

Talking to your child can help adolescents process their feelings and gain perspective. Every adolescent has questions in their mind, that need to be answered. The best thing would be if a parent is able to cater to the needs of the adolescent. When they do share their feelings, listen carefully without interrupting or dismissing their concerns

Meditation

Deep breathing, meditation, or yoga can help manage stress and reduce the intensity of mood swings. A lot of adolescents struggle with focus and may thus feel that the above are not meant for them.

Don’t expect much

Many adolescents get demotivated post setting a goal that is difficult to meet. Setting realistic expectations is very essential. It is also important to take small steps towards the same goal.

Be patient

Patience and empathy can go a long way in helping them feel supported. Encourage them to express their emotions through creative activities, which can be a therapeutic way to process feelings.

Set routines

A consistent schedule is very essential, a regular routine can provide stability and reduce stress. This includes a set time for homework, leisure, and bedtime. Establish clear rules and consequences, but also be flexible and understanding as they navigate their emotions.

So, as a parent you can also follow these practices for better development of your children during this transition phase of their life. You should always set your priorities according to your teenager and try to understand them in right perspective.
